Active holidays in Kranjska Gora

Summer

Summer in the kingdom of Goldenhorn is unforgettable for those who like to be in direct contact with the nature and want to spend active holidays.

4 sand tennis courts, tennis school, cycling, you can hire mountain bikes, swimming,...

Guided hiking, mountaineering, walks, climbing natural and man-made walls, riding, easier and more difficult cycling tours, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, canyoning, hang-gliding, paragliding.

In Kranjska Gora there is also a small golf course and a five-hole course for practicing.

Hiking

By bus from Kranjska Gora to the Russian Chapel, built in memory of the Russian prisoners who died during the First World War in the avalanche when building the road to Vršič.  Then you will walk through  Stari Tamar to Poštarski dom to Vršič pass and on the slopes of Mojstrovka you will be able to see the bunkers preserved from the First World War.  By bus back to the valley, visit to Zelenci Nature Reserve and a picnic in snack bar Pehta.

By chair-lift from Kranjska Gora to the top of Vitranc. You will walk along the ridge to Ciprnik and then descend to Planica. Along the forest or cycling path from Planica to Zelenci Nature Reserve and finish in snack bar Pehta.

Cycling

In the vicinity of Hotel Kotnik there is a new, 25-kilometre long cycling path, leading from Rateče past Kranjska Gora, Gozd Martuljek and further on to Mojstrana.  From there you can cycle on towards Bled through the Radovna valley.


Another interesting cycling tour leads to the valley of Planica and to Tamar; hint for families: visit Laghi di Fusine in the neighbouring Italy where the cycling path leads across the fields and through the forest, there is a small ascent along the local road before you come to the lakes.

In the Upper Sava Valley there are ample opportunities for cycling along forest paths (from easier to more demanding ones). There is a map available, where the paths and the level of difficulty as well as other points of interest are marked.

KRANJSKA GORA IS HEAVEN FOR MOTORCYCLISTS

Every year the number of motorcyclists who take the road to Vršič pass (1611m) is higher.
This is a special adventure for those who like sharp bends and at the same time admire the beauty of the Julian Alps.
A ride through Triglav National Park and the Upper Sava Valley is something you will never forget.
Slovenian roads lead to the Postojna Cave, Lipica, old castles and towns and finish on the Slovenian coast, about 200 km from Kranjska Gora.

Winter

Winter is at home in Kranjska Gora.

Skiing and snowboarding on more than 30 kilometres of ski runs, cross-country skiing along 40 kilometres of trails from Kranjska Gora to Rateče, Planica and Tamar.
Night sledding, ice climbing, cross-country skiing, night skiing, organisation of ski competitions, snowmobiling, sledding along natural trails...

Winter time in Kranjska Gora is something special – in addition to all winter sports there is always a lot of entertainment on snow and in the restaurants, casino, swimming pools,....

There are several small shops in Kranjska Gora, also nice souvenir shops. Elan factory outlet, with a wide range of sports clothes and sports equipment for summer and winter activities, is about 40 kilometres from Kranjska Gora. You can visit also Tarvisio (20 kilometres) and its famous market with leather products.

 

Excursions

Julian Alps

By bus to Vršič, a mountain pass 1611metres above the sea level, where you will be able to enjoy a beautiful view of the Julian Alps. The road then descends to the valley of Trenta where you can visit Triglav National Park Museum with an information centre, Bovec and the First World War Museum in Kobarid. All the time you be riding along the crystal clear Soča.

On the way back you will go over Predel pass to Italy. A visit to the famous market with leather products in Tarvisio. On the way back to Slovenia you will stop in Planica and Zelenci Nature Reserve (the outspring of the Sava Dolinka).

Peričnik Waterfall and Vrata Valley

Through Mojstrana to Vrata Valley which is in the heart of the Triglav National Park. A stop at Peričnik Waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Europe (40 metres).

A stop at Aljažev dom in Vrata and a short walk to the bottom of the magnificent Triglav northern face (2864 m).

Bled and Bohinj

Bled (35 km from Kranjska Gora) with its lake and the castle is a world famous tourist resort. From the castle terrace you will be able to enjoy a wonderful view of the lake and mountains in the surrounding. Why not visit the island in the middle of the lake with its famous church? The best way is to take a pletna, the traditional boat.
Bohinj, known for the biggest Slovenian glacier lake, is 25 km from Bled. You will be astonished by the small villages, rich iron making and cheese making tradition,... Savica waterfall (about 20-minute walk from the lake) is well worth visiting.
On the way back you will stop in Begunje, a village known all over the world because of a famous folk music group Avsenik.

LJUBLJANA

It is 80 km from Kranjska Gora to the capital of Slovenia.  It is the political, cultural, science and university centre of the country. Visitors are amazed by its rich medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and secession art and works of art by famous Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik (such as Tromostovje (Three bridges).

POSTOJNA and LIPICA

The beauty of the world famous Postojna Cave (140 km from Kranjska Gora) has been admired for more than 180 years. Every year it attracts millions of visitors, looking for sights, intact nature, and they are all amazed by the beauty of the nature, and mystery and beauty of the galleries, halls, stalactites and stalagmites. A train will take you through the most interesting parts of the cave. The visit lasts about one hour and a half.
Lipica is the cradle of the world famous Lipizzaner horses. You can visit the stables and see the performance of classical riding school (from April to October twice a day).

SLOVENIAN COAST

The Alpine part of Slovenia is only about 200 kilometres from the Adriatic coast, where you can admire little fishing villages in the vicinity of Koper, beautiful beaches and a famous sea resort Portorož. You will be inspired by Piran, a medieval town with Venetian architecture.

VENICE (Italy)

Venice, one of the most attractive cities in the world, can be reached via Tarvisio and then along the motorway past Udine to Venice. It is famous for its history, art, palaces, canals, gondolas, bridges, St. Mark's Church,   Doge's Palace,...
