The Karavanke Mountains got their name from the characteristic east–west direction of their ridges and valleys, which follow one another like a caravan. Their unspoiled nature and the uniqueness of their plant and animal species place them within the Natura 2000 protected area.
The mountains and hills, with well-maintained hiking and mountaineering trails suitable for both easy walks and more demanding climbs, offer diverse opportunities for active leisure for various groups such as hikers, mushroom pickers, and paragliders. The Karavanke are an ideal choice for short nature getaways as well as for multi-day hikes and relaxation.
You can climb the beautiful Karavanke peak Kepa (2143 m) via several routes starting from the Upper Sava Valley.
In the Karavanke, you can also visit Tromeja, a peak marking the meeting point of the borders of Slovenia, Italy, and Austria. It is accessible from all three countries.
A shorter hike from Kranjska Gora will take you to Srnjak, which offers a stunning viewpoint of the Julian Alps.
From Martuljek, you can hike up to the small village of Srednji Vrh.
