Construction of the Vršič Road began in the spring of 1915, while preparations for the project started much earlier, in the autumn of 1914. The road across the Vršič mountain pass was needed to enable faster and easier supply of the Soča Front, which was raging on the other side of the pass.

The construction of the Vršič Road claimed a huge number of lives, not only of Russian prisoners of war but also of others who participated in this demanding project.
